Whiskey tasting and rating shouldn’t be scary, “fancy” or serious. Really, this all about trying to capture how much we enjoy a particular whiskey, and not about anything else. Let’s walk through my philosophy for rating a whiskey.

Appearance

How does the whiskey look?

Here are some questions to help come up with a score: Is it an appealing color or not? Does it look nice in the glass? Is it cloudy or clear?

On a scale of 1 to 5, rate how much you enjoy the appearance of the whiskey.


Aroma

How does the whiskey smell?

Here are some questions to help come up with a score: Does it smell good or bad? It is simple or complex? Does it change if we let it breathe or add water or ice?

On a scale of 1 to 5, rate how much you enjoy the aroma and smell of the whiskey.


Taste

How does the whiskey taste?

Here are some questions to help come up with a score: Does it taste good, bad or just ok? What does it taste like? Does it Is it heavy or soft on the palate? Is it alcohol heavy?

On a scale of 1 to 5, rate how much you enjoy the flavor and mouth feel of the whiskey.


How does the whiskey finish?

Here are some questions to help come up with a score: Does it “burn” when you swallow? Is the after taste good or bad? Is the finish dry?

On a scale of 1 to 5, rate how much you enjoy the finish of the whiskey.
